Shangri-la to Deqing

Shangri-la to Deqing
Just got back from going round trip Shangri-la to Deqing. It can be done! Here is the catch. Construction the whole way there. Construction is not an adequate word think about riding a bucking bronco for 9 hours and you got the idea.. The road is open every three days and your best bet is to chat with the local bus station in Shangri-la or Deqing to see if it is open or not. I drove up there in about 9 hours, the bus from Shangri-la pulled into Deqing just after me. The road from Deqing to Wexi is under construction too. The way back I paid a driver to shepard me back to Shangri-la when then road was closed. You can get a local driver to take you from Deqing to Shangri-la for 180 kuai and it took 13 hours. We slipped into Sichuan at the BaiMa Pass which was an old logging road then followed the Yangtze River all the to Tiger Leaping Gorge then back up via 214. Our butts were numb but the views were totally amazing. We saw Mei Li Snow Mountain two days in a row with no cloud cover. I think it was worth it.
